New Food & Drink Skills project supports Wales Climate Week activities in schools

Food & Drink Skills Wales and Welsh Government are supporting teachers during Wales Climate Week through providing new bilingual digital resources to raise awareness and help inform discussion around climate change.

All secondary schools in Wales have received the School Activity Ideas Pack, which includes thought-provoking ideas encouraging pupils to research the origin of produce in order to calculate food miles, investigate the various packaging materials used, create a sustainable recipe, try their hand at a TikTok reel focusing on being creative with food waste, and much more.

The packs have received a positive response form schools, with many utilising the ideas to support task-based learning during the week.

Jane Pettit, Subject Leader for Food, Nutrition and Horticulture at Llanishen High School near Cardiff said,

“We’re really excited to participate in Wales Climate Week. Thanks to the Activity Pack from Food & Drink Skills Wales, we’ve developed activities, which involves a Climate Change quiz and a classroom exercise looking at food miles and food provenance.

We’re adding a competitive element by running the session as a competition to see which group wins! Also, we’re fortunate to have our own zero waste polytunnel and garden, which is a fantastic way of getting children interested in environmental issues and where their food comes from.”

This is just one element of the new Food & Drink Skills Wales project. The programme also offers funding for eligible businesses within the sector, with a focus on the Welsh food and drink processing and manufacturing industry. Fully funded workshops on Decarbonisation and Sustainability are currently available.
