WANTED – the search is on for two young individuals to take up the ‘cyfle’ of a lifetime…

Would you like paid work experience visiting farms or attending farming events, or working within agricultural marketing, event management, business or financial administration?

Following the success of last year’s internship scheme, Menter a Busnes (MaB), one of Wales’ leading economic development companies, is offering two young people the chance to undertake a ‘hands on’ paid internship working within the agri-industry.

Eirwen Williams, director of rural services for MaB, explained that the word ‘cyfle’ translates to chance or opportunity.

“This internship scheme will provide two young school, college or university leavers with a range of relevant experiences that will give them the opportunity to find out which areas they find most interesting and provide a valuable stepping-stone to help get their future career prospects off to a great start.”

Lisa Jones, previous year intern says:

“Through ‘Cyfle,’ I gained hands-on experience in the Agricultural sector. This helped me understand the industry better and gave me valuable insights into the important work Farming Connect does to support farmers. Like me, you’ll learn about the diverse projects and events they organise, from Diversification workshops to the ‘Our Farms’ initiatives. You’ll see firsthand the dedication and effort that goes into making these projects a success, keeping you updated on the ever-changing agricultural landscape. If you’re interested in a career in agriculture, ‘Cyfle’ is a fantastic stepping stone, offering invaluable experience and helping you discover your passion within the industry.”

Gwenan Owen, previous year’s intern added:

“At a crossroads after graduating from Aberystwyth University, the Cyfle internship with Menter a Busnes felt like a lifeline.
This internship truly opened my eyes to the inner workings of Farming Connect and the diverse opportunities available to their employees. Witnessing the positive impact of their projects and the genuine connection between staff and farmers solidified my passion for a career in agriculture. This firsthand experience, equipping me with invaluable industry knowledge, directly contributed to my success in landing my current role. If you’re graduating or harbor a passion for agriculture, I urge you to apply for this transformative internship. You’ll connect with diverse individuals and gain an immersive understanding of the dynamic agricultural landscape. Not only will it equip you with practical skills, but it might just illuminate your career path as it did for me.

Eirwen Williams added: “Whether you want experience of working for the business or financial side of MaB, within our marketing or administration divisions, or the opportunity to engage directly with farmers through visiting rural businesses, agricultural events, shows or livestock markets, ‘Cyfle’ offers a unique opportunity to shadow and learn from our experienced team members,” said Eriwen Williams.

With 200 hours of work on offer for both interns, paid at £12 per hour, this could be the perfect opportunity for any school or college/university student who must have completed full-time education by summer 2024.The internship must take place between May and July 2024 and/or September and November 2024.

“Applicants will ideally be able to travel to one or more of the Menter a Busnes offices which are in Ynys Môn, Llanrwst, Meifod, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Cardiff, but there could also be opportunities to shadow and work alongside regional staff in other parts of Wales.

“Provided you have not already arranged to take up paid employment, ‘Cyfle’ could provide a great opportunity for you to gain relevant paid experience, while adding that all-important notch to your CV,” said Mrs Williams.

The two successful applicants will each be given a designated MaB mentor and will be offered specific continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities. They will also be invited to attend and participate at MaB meetings and receive advice on career development and interview techniques.
